Who we are

Michael Skubic is best known for co-founding Hess Brewing (San Diego's first nano-brewery) in 2009 and later opening up Old Harbor Distilling Co. on 17th & K St in the heard of East Village in 2013—the first distillery in downtown San Diego since Prohibition. At Old Harbor, he developed award-winning spirits inspired by local history and flavors, including San Miguel Southwestern Gin (infused with cucumber, sage, cilantro, and lime), Barrelflag Navy Strength Rum, 1542 California Native Botanical Gin, and Ampersand Cold Pressed Coffee Liqueur. They also launched the first locally produce well line of spirits The Adventure Series: which included entry level priced Gin, Rum & Vodka.

His work helped grow San Diego's craft spirits scene, similar to its renowned craft beer boom. During the COVID-19 pandemic, he contributed to producing and donating hand sanitizer through the San Diego Distillers Guild.

In addition to that he has consulted on some of San Diego’s most influential brands including Black Swan Spirits @ Swan Bar on Adam’s Avenue, Homebrewing Co. the best beer supply store and brewery this side of the mississippi.
